Overview

Getting to Rishikesh — the reality

Rishikesh has no airport, but it does have its own railway station — Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) — with a handful of direct trains from Delhi including the Jan Shatabdi Express. That said, most trains still go to Haridwar Junction (25 km south), which has far more service. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun (35 km north).

If you're coming from Delhi — and most travelers are — you have five options: fly to Dehradun and taxi down, train to Haridwar and auto across, Volvo bus from Kashmere Gate, ordinary bus for the budget-conscious, or self-drive on NH58. Each has trade-offs in time, money, and comfort that we'll break down in detail.

The good news: once you're in Rishikesh, most of the tourist areas (Tapovan, Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat) are within walking distance of each other. You don't need a car or even autos for daily getting-around.

230 km. Five ways to cover it. Here's what each one actually looks like.

What to Know

Delhi to Dehradun flights depart from both T1 (IndiGo, SpiceJet) and T3 (Air India). IndiGo has the most frequencies — book 2-3 weeks ahead for ₹2,500-3,500. Same-day prices can spike to ₹6,000+. Jolly Grant is a small airport with one terminal. Exit and find the pre-paid taxi counter immediately — it's ₹800 to Rishikesh ISBT or ₹1,000-1,200 to Lakshman Jhula/Tapovan. Alternatively, walk 200m outside the airport gate for a shared taxi to Dehradun ISBT (₹50), then catch a bus to Rishikesh (₹50) — total ₹100 but adds 45 minutes.

Local Intel
The Dehradun flight hack: If you're flying from Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad, there are now direct flights to Dehradun (started 2024-25). No need to connect through Delhi. IndiGo operates Mumbai-Dehradun daily (₹3,500-5,000) and Bengaluru-Dehradun 4x/week. Check these before defaulting to the Delhi connect.
Train

Delhi → Haridwar Junction + Shared Auto

Most trains from Delhi go to Haridwar Junction (station code HW). From Haridwar, shared Vikram autos to Rishikesh run constantly from the station parking lot — ₹30-40 per person, 30-40 minutes. No need to pre-book anything for the Haridwar-Rishikesh leg.

Slower but cheaper. Stops at every station. Only take this if Nandini is sold out.

DepartsNew Delhi — 6:45 AM
ArrivesHaridwar — 11:20 AM
Duration4 hrs 35 min

Fastest and most comfortable. Includes meals. Continues to Dehradun if you want the airport route instead.

Trail Tip
Book trains early. The Jan Shatabdi and Shatabdi sell out 2-3 weeks in advance for weekend travel. Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM the day before (10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for non-AC) on irctc.co.in. For Tatkal, have your payment ready — seats go in seconds. Alternatively, the Nandini Express usually has Sleeper availability even 3-4 days before.
Trail Tip
Skip Haridwar entirely — take the train direct to Rishikesh. Rishikesh has its own railway station — Yog Nagari Rishikesh (station code: YNRK). The Jan Shatabdi Express runs direct from Delhi (about 5.5 hours, ₹300–600). While Haridwar has far more train options, arriving directly at Rishikesh saves you the 1-hour transfer from Haridwar. Check availability on IRCTC — seats fill fast in peak season.
Bus

Delhi → Rishikesh by Bus

GGovernment (UPSRTC / UKRTC)

  • Volvo AC — ₹600-800 from ISBT Kashmere Gate, 6-7 hrs. Departs roughly every 2 hours. The most reliable option — government buses stick to schedule.
  • AC Seater — ₹500-650, 6-7 hrs. Same route, slightly older bus stock. Still comfortable.
  • Ordinary Non-AC — ₹350-450, 7-8 hrs. For budget travelers only. No AC, frequent stops, seats don't recline. But it's cheap and runs every 30 minutes.

PPrivate Operators

  • RedBus / Zingbus — Book online. AC sleeper ₹800-1,200, semi-sleeper ₹600-900. Multiple operators — check ratings before booking. Pickup points vary (Kashmere Gate, Majnu Ka Tilla, Dhaula Kuan).
  • IntrCity SmartBus — ₹700-1,000. Probably the best private option — individual screens, charging ports, blankets. Books on their app or via RedBus.
  • Overnight departures — Most leave 9-11 PM, arrive 4-5 AM. You save a night's accommodation but arrive in the dark.
Heads Up
Avoid night buses in monsoon (Jul-Sep). The Haridwar-Rishikesh stretch has landslide-prone sections during heavy rain. Night bus drivers on this route have poor visibility and the road narrows after Haridwar. If you must travel during monsoon, take a morning departure and arrive before dark.

Route Breakdown

Delhi → Meerut (70 km, 1.5 hrs via Delhi-Meerut Expressway) → Muzaffarnagar (50 km, 45 min) → Roorkee (35 km, 30 min) → Haridwar (30 km, 30 min) → Rishikesh (25 km, 30 min). The road is four-lane NH58 almost the entire way. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway section is excellent — 100+ kmph. It narrows to two lanes in some stretches near Muzaffarnagar. The Haridwar-Rishikesh section is scenic but has sharp curves.

Good Stops

Cheetal Grand (Meerut bypass, 1.5 hrs from Delhi) — reliable highway restaurant, clean washrooms, decent paranthas. Haveli Hari Ganga or any dhaba in Roorkee (3 hrs from Delhi) for a proper meal break. Don't stop in Muzaffarnagar — traffic congestion makes getting back on the highway painful.

Budget Note
Self-drive economics: Fuel (petrol) for a 230 km drive costs roughly ₹1,200-1,500 depending on your car's mileage. Add ₹450-550 in tolls (FASTag works on all toll plazas). Total: ₹1,700-2,000. Split between 3-4 friends, that's ₹425-650 per person — comparable to a bus but with door-to-door convenience and the ability to stop wherever you want.

Dehradun to Rishikesh — 35 km, 45 min

If you flew into Jolly Grant or arrived in Dehradun by train from another city, here's how to cover the last 35 km.

Pre-Paid Taxi

₹800 - ₹1,200
45 min

Available at Jolly Grant Airport and Dehradun Railway Station. Airport pre-paid counter is immediately after exit. Price varies by drop point — ISBT Rishikesh is ₹800, Tapovan/Lakshman Jhula is ₹1,000-1,200. Meter taxis are rare; always use the pre-paid counter or negotiate before getting in.

Shared Cab / Taxi

₹150 - ₹200 per person
50 min

Shared Sumos and Tata Magic vehicles run from Dehradun ISBT (Mussoorie bus stand area) to Rishikesh ISBT. They leave when full (8-10 passengers). Available from 6 AM to 7 PM. Most frequent in the morning. Not available directly from the airport — you'd need to get to Dehradun ISBT first.

Local Bus

₹50
1 hr

UKRTC buses from Dehradun ISBT to Rishikesh ISBT run every 20-30 minutes from 5:30 AM to 9 PM. The cheapest option. Buses are basic — non-AC, bench seats — but they run on schedule. From the airport, take a city bus to Dehradun ISBT (₹15, 30 min) first, then switch to the Rishikesh bus.

Vikram / Auto from City

₹40 - ₹60
Varies

If you're already in Dehradun city, Vikram shared autos run on fixed routes to Dehradun ISBT for ₹10-20. From ISBT, catch the Rishikesh bus or shared Sumo. Auto-rickshaws from Dehradun Clock Tower to ISBT cost ₹40-60. Don't take an auto all the way to Rishikesh — they'll quote ₹500-800 and it's not worth it.

Trail Tip
Airport transfer tip: If 2-3 of you are arriving on the same flight, the pre-paid taxi at ₹1,000 split three ways is cheaper per person than shared cabs. And you go directly to your hostel instead of ISBT Rishikesh.
From Haridwar

Haridwar to Rishikesh — 25 km, 30-45 min

This is the most common last-mile leg — every train traveler ends up at Haridwar Junction and needs to get to Rishikesh.

Shared Auto / Vikram

Recommended
₹30 - ₹40 per person
30-40 min

The default option. Vikram shared autos (large auto-rickshaws seating 8-10) line up in the parking lot directly outside Haridwar Junction. They leave when full — usually every 5-10 minutes. Drop-off is at Rishikesh ISBT or the main chowk. Say 'Rishikesh' and they'll point you to the right vehicle. Available 5 AM to 10 PM.

Private Taxi

₹400 - ₹500
25-30 min

Pre-paid taxi counter is inside Haridwar station. You can also negotiate with taxis in the parking lot (start from ₹350, they'll settle at ₹400-450). Useful if you have heavy luggage, arriving late at night, or want to go directly to Lakshman Jhula/Tapovan without a ISBT transfer.

Local Bus

₹25
40-50 min

UKRTC buses from Haridwar bus stand (200m from the railway station) to Rishikesh ISBT. Every 15-20 minutes from 6 AM to 8 PM. The cheapest option. Buses are crowded during morning and evening hours. Standing room only is common.

E-Rickshaw to Bus Stand + Bus

₹10 + ₹25 = ₹35
45-55 min

If the shared auto line is too long (happens during festival season — Kanwar Yatra, Kumbh), walk to the main road and take an e-rickshaw to Haridwar bus stand for ₹10, then catch a Rishikesh bus. Slower but avoids the station chaos.

Heads Up
Where taxis overcharge: The most common scam is taxi drivers at Haridwar station quoting ₹800-1,000 "to Rishikesh." The actual distance is 25 km. Pre-paid counter rate is ₹400-500. Either use the pre-paid counter or tell them firmly: "Bhai, ISBT Rishikesh, char sau." (₹400). They'll grumble but agree. If they don't, walk 50 meters to the shared auto stand.

Getting around within Rishikesh

The tourist areas are compact. Walking is the default mode for most travelers. Here's what to know about each option.

WWalking

Most travelers walk everywhere. The Tapovan → Lakshman Jhula → Ram Jhula → Triveni Ghat stretch is about 5 km total along the Ganga. It's flat, scenic, and the most pleasant way to experience Rishikesh. The only section that feels long is Ram Jhula to Triveni Ghat (1.5 km along a busier road).

SScooty / Activa Rental

₹300-500/day from shops in Tapovan and near Lakshman Jhula. Need: valid license + ₹1,000-2,000 deposit. Useful for Neelkanth Mahadev Temple (12 km), Kunjapuri Temple (25 km), or Shivpuri visits. Roads are narrow and steep in places — experienced riders only. Fuel costs ₹100-150/day. Helmets provided (quality varies).

AAuto-Rickshaw

₹50-200 within Rishikesh. No meters — negotiate before getting in. Common fares: ISBT to Lakshman Jhula ₹80-100, ISBT to Tapovan ₹100-150, Ram Jhula to Triveni Ghat ₹50. Shared autos on fixed routes (ISBT ↔ Ram Jhula ↔ Lakshman Jhula) cost ₹15-30 per person. Available roughly 7 AM to 9 PM.

EE-Rickshaw

₹10-30 for short hops, mainly on the Ram Jhula to Triveni Ghat stretch and around Rishikesh main market. These electric three-wheelers are quieter and cheaper than autos but slower. They operate on semi-fixed routes — flag them down, state your destination, they'll nod or wave you off. Not available to Tapovan or Lakshman Jhula (roads are too narrow/steep).

Local Intel
No Uber, no Ola. Ride-hailing apps do not operate in Rishikesh as of 2026. For airport transfers and longer trips (Haridwar, Neelkanth Temple, Kunjapuri sunrise), book through your hostel. Zostel, GoStops, and Moustache all arrange shared transfers at near-cost rates. For solo travelers, this is often cheaper than a private taxi and you get travel companions.
Pro Tips

Transport tips from people who've done this

Trail Tip
The Dehradun flight hack: Flights from Delhi to Dehradun cost ₹2,500-3,500 if booked 2-3 weeks ahead. The total journey time (including airport commute, flight, and taxi to Rishikesh) is about 3-4 hours — half the time of a bus or train. If your time is worth more than the ₹2,000 premium over a train ticket, this is the objectively best way to reach Rishikesh from Delhi.
Heads Up
Train bookings fill fast. The Jan Shatabdi (the most popular Delhi-Haridwar train for tourists) sells out 15-20 days before departure for weekends and holidays. Book on IRCTC the moment reservations open (120 days before). For last-minute travel, the Nandini Express Sleeper usually has availability even 2-3 days before — it departs at midnight so fewer people want it.
Local Intel
Arriving from other cities? From Chandigarh: drive or bus, 5 hrs via Paonta Sahib. From Jaipur: overnight bus to Haridwar (10 hrs), then auto to Rishikesh. From Mumbai/Bengaluru: fly direct to Dehradun (IndiGo operates both routes) instead of connecting through Delhi. From Nepal (Kathmandu): fly to Delhi, then use any Delhi-Rishikesh option above. There's no practical direct route from Nepal to Rishikesh.
Budget Note
The absolute cheapest way: Nandini Express Sleeper from Delhi (₹200) + shared Vikram from Haridwar station to Rishikesh (₹30) = ₹230 total. Depart Delhi at midnight, arrive Rishikesh at 5:30 AM. You can't beat ₹230 for 230 km — that's literally ₹1 per kilometer. The catch: it's a midnight departure on a non-AC sleeper train.
